Ian Mackay – Chair
Ian has been a resident of Qualicum Beach since 1990, and has been actively involved in the local real estate market since that time. His previous career experience was as the Marketing Director for one of Canada’s largest developers/operators of recreational and residential properties. As a realtor Ian has been affiliated with Royal LePage since 1996 and is currently licensed as an Associate Broker. Most recently he has helped develop and been a proponent of Royal LePage’s corporate citizen philosophy and continues to advance their participation with the Oceanside Hospice Society. Ian hopes his business acumen will serve the society in a variety of ways, including raising the awareness of the services that Oceanside Hospice Society provides and promoting the ethical fundraising activities of Oceanside Hospice Society.
Ruth Vandekamp – Board Secretary
Ruth has developed strong skills in diverse areas through a combination of education and experience, including early childhood education, adult literacy, corporate human resources, and non-profit organizations in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Her interest in Hospice was triggered by her father’s experience with Palliative Care in Saskatoon. Wanting to “pay back” the excellent care her father received and recognizing the need for Hospice services, she participated in the Oceanside Hospice Training in 2009 and has volunteered in several areas since then.
Julie Chambers – Director
Julie was born and raised in England and has lived in Qualicum Beach for the past 20 years with her husband Gary and their two children, Liam and Mikaela. Julie has been actively involved in this community in many diverse facets including publisher of the local newspaper, a long standing board director with The Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce, and many other committees within the community. Julie has been employed for the past three years at The Gardens as a consultant in the field of senior and assisted living lifestyle choices. Over the past couple of years through a personal situation, Julie received support from the Oceanside Hospice Society and she is deeply honoured to be able to contribute and give back to this vital organization. Julie was elected to the Hospice Board in July 2014.
Susie Coen – Director
Susie is currently working as a Registered Nurse at the Urgent Care Centre in Parksville. She has extensive experience in nursing, including emergency, hospice, injury prevention and volunteer management. Susie relocated to the Oceanside area from Edmonton 4 years ago, and her interest in hospice care continued when she started volunteering for OHS in January 2013. Susie volunteers in the Palliative Care Unit in Nanaimo, Hospice at Trillium, and can be seen helping out at many OHS community events throughout the year. She brings to the Board six years of experience on a provincial veterinary tribunal panel in Alberta, and a working knowledge of OHS volunteer roles. Susie has an understanding and appreciation of what OHS provides to the community and is an enthusiastic promoter of the Oceanside Hospice Society.
John Mercer – Director
John, who has lived in French Creek for over 10 years, comes to us with a great deal of administrative experience in educational organizations and, in that role, has dealt with business, government, unions and community groups. Prior to retiring, he also had his own mediation consulting business. John lost his wife three years ago, and knows personally about palliative care and the need there is to help others through the grieving process. He appreciates the knowledge, the skill and the care Oceanside Hospice Society brings to its community and looks forward to helping them help others.
Sandra Rankin – Director
Tina Rasmussen – Director
Tina has extensive executive operations and facilities management experience working with non-profits, tech companies and provincial crown corporations both in Oceanside and the Lower Mainland. She has over 20 years of experience coordinating complex executive schedules, facility management and re-locations, local and international event management, bookkeeping, strategic and budget planning. In 2011 Tina joined the Family Resource Association as the Executive Coordinator. Having had personal experience, Tina has a passion for Hospice with the care and support it provides to families in our community.
